How to Turn a DSLR or Mirrorless Camera into a Webcam

gambar
Zals Tech - In this online era, have you ever asked yourself how to use your camera as a webcam? Yes, webcams are now a very important need because nowadays everything is online, so meetings from ordinary to important ones need to use a webcam.

To do this, you need to prepare:

  • HDMI Capture Card
  • HDMI and USB Cable
  • Broadcast app (optional)

Before we start, it's worth noting that your camera needs an HDMI output and the ability to output a 'clean' HDMI signal, which means it doesn't include graphic overlays like frame-rate and autofocus modes. On many cameras, you can delete them either in the settings or by simply pressing the 'info' or 'display' buttons on the back of the camera.

1. Prepare HDMI Capture Card

You need a video capture card that supports UVC (or USB Video Class). This is the same protocol that allows webcams to work with the likes of Zoom and Skype.

Examples of video capture cards themselves are the Elgato HD60 S +, Magewell USB Capture HDMI gen 2, and the Mirabox Capture Card.

2. Connect

Now all you have to do is connect the HDMI capture card to your camera and laptop. Plug your camera's HDMI output into the HDMI input on the HDMI capture card, then finally into your laptop via USB. Check your capture card device manual to see if you need additional drivers. Now you are ready to move on to the final step.

3. Run

If you just want to turn your camera into a webcam for team meetings, you don't need to install any additional software.

Whether you're using a macOS or Windows computer, your laptop or PC should recognize the camera as a webcam and make it available as an option in your chosen meeting application (zoom, gmeet, etc.).

If you want to change settings or add some effects, you can use OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), which is recommended by manufacturers like Nikon and Panasonic as the top choice for their cameras. OBS is a free, open source application for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and includes powerful features such as an audio mixer.
